Transferring a timeline

Transferring a timeline hands its ownership to someone else: a person, or a team. It is separate from handing over a team's own ownership — see Teams and the Team plan for that.

Offering a timeline

You can offer a timeline you own, or a team-owned timeline whose owner you are. Open the timeline and go to its Collaborators tab, then Transfer ownership. Choose whether the recipient is a person or a team, and enter their handle. A timeline can have only one open offer at a time.

Before you send it, Timescrolly shows what the offer means: ownership moves as soon as the recipient accepts, its collaborators are removed, and it may leave your collections. If the timeline is set to Team visibility, it becomes private once accepted, so the giving team's members lose access to it — the recipient can only restore that afterwards if the recipient is itself a team. Nothing happens to your timeline until someone actually accepts.

While an offer is pending

A banner on the timeline's page shows who it was offered to, when, and when the offer expires, along with the same consequences. Withdraw offer removes it at any point before the recipient responds.

Accepting or declining

The recipient reviews a pending offer from their inbox: Review… opens a dialog showing what accepting costs — the storage, timeline slot, tags and entities it will use — and where the timeline will land. If something stands in the way, such as the address already being taken or not enough storage or timeline room, it is listed with what would fix it; a taken address can be resolved right there by choosing a different one. Accepting requires ticking a box confirming you understand the cost. Declining asks for confirmation and removes the offer; whoever made it can offer it again.

What moves and what doesn't

Only ownership, visibility and collaborators change. The timeline itself — its items, periods, media and change history — is untouched by the transfer. Its existing collaborators are removed, since they had access under the old owner; the new owner invites their own. If it was a Team-visible timeline, it turns private on acceptance, as described above, and if Who can comment was set to the team, it goes back to Collaborators too; the comments themselves stay with the timeline. The timeline gets a new address under its new owner, and links to the old one, including any earlier slugs, stop working. Entities its items link are copied into the receiver's set, with their images; you keep your originals. An entity visible to a team arrives private when the timeline moves to a person or the site. A custom calendar comes with the timeline: if the receiver already has one with the same name and definition the timeline uses that, otherwise a copy is added to their calendars, where it counts toward their calendar limit. The sources its items cite, and those its copied entities and relations cite, are copied into the receiver's library too, and an identical source the receiver already has is reused.

Seeing offers you sent or received

The Transfers page lists both directions: Offers to you and Offers you made, each searchable and filterable by status, including offers that have already been accepted, declined, withdrawn or expired. New transfer starts one from there by picking a timeline first.
