Remixing a timeline

Remixing copies a timeline you like into your own account, or into a team, so you can edit it like any timeline you made. Showcase timelines on Explore are there to be remixed; a remix may well be your first timeline.

Who can remix

Anyone signed in with a verified email can remix a public timeline whose owner has left remixing on, and any of the showcase timelines. You can always remix a timeline you manage, whatever its visibility, which is also how you duplicate one.

Choosing what comes along

The Remix button on a timeline opens a dialog that lists its items, entities, tags and sources. Everything starts ticked. Untick what you don't want, or use the switches for all events, all periods, or a whole section. A ticked entity, tag or source is copied even if no ticked item uses it, and an unticked one is not: mentions of it in the copy become plain text. If you untick a period but keep its events, the events move to the top level of the copy.

What fits

The preview on the right shows how the copy fits your plan: how many items the copy may hold, and how many tags, entities and sources it adds to your set. When something doesn't fit, the preview says what to trim and offers to keep the first few that do. You can make 20 remixes a day.

Images and attachments

Images and attachments come along when you leave the switch on and your storage has room. When it doesn't, or the media is over the size limit for a remix, the copy is still made, without them, and the dialog says so. Media over your plan's per-item limit is left out item by item, main image first.

What the copy is

The copy is private and yours: nobody from the original has access to it, and it has no live link back. Entities that come over are private too; publish what you want afterwards. Collaborators, comments, suggestions, share links and history are not copied.

The copy's details say which timeline it was remixed from, with a link while the original is public. The original shows how many times it has been remixed, and its owner is told who remixed it. A timeline remixed from a private one says only that.

Turning remixing off

Remixing is on for every timeline you publish. Turn it off on the timeline's Details tab in the dashboard, under Remixing, if you publish a timeline to show rather than to share. Showcase timelines can always be remixed.
