Terms of Service
Last updated October 15, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Inquibit ("we", "us"), which runs Timescrolly. They apply whenever you use the Timescrolly website, apps and API (together, "the service"). Please read them together with our Privacy policy and Cookie policy. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.
The service
Timescrolly lets you build zoomable timelines. A timeline holds items: events at a moment and periods that span a stretch of time, from deep time and dates before the common era to today. Items can be nested inside one another and carry rich text, sources and citations, locations shown on a map, tags, images, audio and video files, PDF documents and voice memos. You can group timelines into collections, share them with other people, work on them with collaborators and teams, and look back through and restore earlier versions.
We keep improving the service, which means features will change over time. We may add, change or remove features. When a change takes away something you pay for, we will tell you in advance where we reasonably can.
Your account
Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. If you use Timescrolly on behalf of a school, business, club or other group, you confirm that you are allowed to accept these terms for it.
Signing in
You can sign in with an email address and password, with a one-time code we email to you, or with your Google or Apple account. You must give us a real email address that you control: we use it to verify your account, to let you sign in and to send you messages about the service.
Keeping your account safe
You are responsible for what happens under your account. Keep your password and the devices you sign in on secure, and don't share your account with other people. Instead, invite them as collaborators or team members. If you think someone else has access to your account, tell us straight away at [email protected].
Plans and billing
Free, Pro and Team
Timescrolly has three plans:
- Free has no time limit and needs no payment details.
- Pro gives your own account more room: more timelines, items, storage, tags and collections, more images per item, audio, video and documents on items, editor collaborators, and a longer change history.
- Team includes everything in Pro and lets you create and fund teams (see "Teams" below).
The current limits and prices of each plan are on the Pricing page. They are part of these terms. Plans are billed monthly or yearly, and prices are in euros.
Payment through Stripe
Paid plans are sold and billed through Stripe, using Stripe's merchant-of-record service (Stripe Managed Payments). For these purchases Stripe acts as the seller: it handles payment, charges and pays the applicable VAT or sales tax, and issues invoices. Stripe's own terms apply to the payment. We never see or store your full card number.
Renewal
A subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period, monthly or yearly, until you cancel it. Stripe charges the payment method on file at each renewal. If a payment fails, Stripe retries it for a while and your plan stays active in the meantime. If the payment still can't be collected, the subscription ends and your account falls back to the Free limits (see "Downgrades and content over a limit" below).
Upgrades
Moving from Pro to Team takes effect immediately. Stripe charges the difference for the rest of the current period straight away.
Cancelling
You can cancel at any time from the billing page in your dashboard or through Stripe's customer portal. Cancelling stops the next renewal. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for. Until then you can undo the cancellation. Moving from Team down to Pro also takes effect at the end of the current period.
Downgrades and content over a limit
When a plan ends or you move to a smaller plan, we don't delete your content because it is over a limit. Instead:
- everything you already have stays readable and shareable;
- you can still edit, delete, move and transfer existing content, and remove collaborators and members;
- anything that adds to a budget that is over its limit is refused until you are back under it or upgrade. That includes creating timelines, items, collections or tags, uploading media and inviting people;
- existing images and files stay visible, but new uploads above your storage budget are refused;
- collaborators with edit rights on timelines you pay for can only view them while your plan doesn't include editor collaborators. Their edit rights come back, without a new invitation, when you upgrade again;
- how far back you can see and restore change history follows your current plan.
Refunds
If you live in the EU, the UK or another country with a statutory right to withdraw from an online purchase, you have that right as the law describes it. A paid plan starts as soon as you buy it. If you ask for that, you may lose the right of withdrawal, or have to pay for the part of the period you used, as far as the law allows. Stripe applies these rules as the seller.
Apart from that, and from any other rights the law gives you, payments are not refundable and we don't give credit for part of a billing period. If something went wrong with a charge, write to [email protected] and we'll look into it.
Price changes
We may change our prices. A new price applies to an existing subscription only from its next renewal, and we will tell you in advance so you can cancel first if you want to.
Teams
Owners and funding
A team is a shared space where a group builds and owns timelines together. Each team has exactly one owner. A team is funded in one of two ways:
- by its owner: the owner is on the Team plan, and the team is paid for by the owner's own subscription at no extra cost. One Team plan can fund a limited number of teams (see Pricing);
- by the team itself: the team has its own subscription, set up with us for schools and other institutions that need the bill in the team's name. The owner of such a team doesn't need a paid plan of their own.
Roles and members
The owner, admins and contributors of a team can write in it; other members can only view. A team can have members up to its member limit (see Pricing). The price of a team does not depend on how many members it has or which roles they hold: adding, promoting or removing members never changes a bill.
Members keep their own personal plan. A role in a team lets a member work inside the team, and nothing more.
When a team's funding ends
If the subscription that funds a team ends, the team is paused. Nothing is deleted and members keep their roles. Its owner, admins and contributors can keep editing what exists, but nothing new can be added until the team is funded again.
Transferring a team
The owner can offer the team to one of its current members. The offer expires if it isn't answered within 7 days, and the owner can withdraw it before then. To accept, the member must confirm that they take over ownership and the team's billing responsibility. For an owner-funded team, the new owner must be on the Team plan, and the team is paid for by their subscription from then on. When the transfer goes through, the new owner becomes the owner and the previous owner becomes an admin.
Your content
What stays yours
"Your content" is everything you put into Timescrolly: timelines, items, text, sources, locations, tags, images, audio, video, documents and voice memos. You keep all the rights you have in it. We don't claim ownership of it.
The licence you give us
To run the service we need your permission to handle your content. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, process, adapt (for example resizing images or making previews of video and PDFs), transmit and display your content. We use it only to provide, secure and improve the service, and only to show your content to the people you make it visible to. This licence ends when your content is permanently deleted from the service. It continues only as far as others have legitimately received the content before then, for example a timeline you transferred to someone else.
Timelines owned by someone else
A timeline is owned by a person or a team. When you add content to a timeline someone else owns, as a collaborator or team member, you allow that owner, and the people they share the timeline with, to keep, edit, restore and display your contributions within the service. That stays true after your access ends or your account is deleted. The same applies when you transfer a timeline to another person or team: it becomes theirs, content included.
Public timelines and share links
You decide who sees each timeline:
- Private timelines are visible only to you, the people you add as collaborators and, for team timelines, the team's owner and admins.
- Team timelines are visible to every member of the owning team.
- Public timelines can be read by anyone, without an account. They are listed on your public profile, and search engines may find and index them.
A share link lets anyone who has the link view that timeline without signing in, even if it is private. Anyone you send the link to can pass it on. A share link lasts until it expires or until you revoke it, whichever comes first. You can revoke it at any time.
Make sure you have the right to publish anything you make public or share by link, and be careful with personal information about other people.
Your responsibility for your content
You are responsible for your content and for having the rights and permissions it needs. This includes photos of other people and material you copied from books, archives or websites. We don't check content before it is published, but we may review it when we receive a report or have a good reason to (see "Acceptable use" below).
Backups of your own
We work hard to keep your content safe, but please keep your own copies of anything you can't afford to lose.
Acceptable use
Timescrolly is for building and sharing timelines. You agree not to use it to:
- break the law, or help anyone else break it;
- upload or share content you don't have the right to share, or that infringes someone else's copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights;
- upload or share sexual content involving minors, or intimate images of anyone without their consent;
- harass, threaten, bully or intimidate anyone, or encourage others to do so;
- promote violence, terrorism or hatred against people for who they are;
- publish other people's private information, such as home addresses, contact details or identity documents, without their permission (doxxing);
- deceive people: impersonate a person or group, run scams or phishing, or pass off fabricated sources as real ones in order to mislead;
- send spam, or use invitations, share links or the contact form for unsolicited messages;
- upload malware, or use the service to host or spread files for purposes that have nothing to do with timelines;
- probe, scan or test the security of the service without our written permission, or get around its security, authentication, rate limits, quotas or plan limits. This includes using several accounts to avoid paying for a plan;
- scrape or access the service by automated means in a way that burdens it or ignores our limits;
- interfere with the service or with other people's use of it.
History is full of violence, hatred and cruelty, and documenting it is welcome. A timeline about a war, a genocide or a crime is fine. Using a timeline to glorify, promote or incite such acts is not.
If you break these rules, we may remove or hide content, take away share links or public visibility, restrict features, or suspend or close your account (see "Suspension and termination" below).
Reporting abuse
If you find content on Timescrolly that you believe is illegal or breaks these terms, email [email protected]. Please include:
- the link to the timeline or item;
- what the problem is and why you think the content is illegal or breaks these terms;
- your name and email address, unless you are reporting sexual content involving minors, which you may report anonymously;
- if you are reporting an infringement of your rights, a statement that you are the rights holder or authorised to act for them, and that your report is accurate to the best of your knowledge.
We review reports promptly and carefully. When we act on content, we tell the person who posted it and explain why, unless the law or safety reasons prevent us. We also tell you what we decided. If you disagree with a decision we made about your content or report, reply to our message and we will look at it again. You may also have other routes under the law, for example going to court or to an out-of-court dispute body.
To report a security vulnerability, write to [email protected] instead of testing it on the live service.
Suspension and termination
Stopping yourself
You can stop using Timescrolly at any time. You can cancel a paid plan as described under "Cancelling" above. To have your account deleted, email [email protected] from the address on your account. Self-service deletion is not available yet. Before we can delete an account, the timelines and teams it owns must be transferred to someone else or deleted. We can help with that.
What we may do
We may suspend or disable your account, or remove or restrict content, if:
- you seriously or repeatedly break these terms;
- we have to by law or by an order from a competent authority;
- your use puts other users, the service or us at risk, for example through fraud or security abuse.
A disabled account can't be used to sign in. Where it is reasonable and allowed, we warn you first, tell you why, and give you a chance to respond. If we close your account for reasons other than your breach of these terms, we refund the unused part of any prepaid period.
After an account ends
When an account is deleted, its content is deleted with it. Content in timelines owned by other people or teams stays with those timelines (see "Timelines owned by someone else" above). The parts of these terms that by their nature should survive continue to apply. These include the permissions for content in timelines owned by others, the limitation of liability and governing law.
Deleted content and restoring it
When you delete a timeline or an item, it is not erased at once: it moves to the trash. Until the date shown there, someone with permission to delete it can restore it. That date is fixed at the moment of deletion. It follows the change-history window of the plan that funds the timeline at that moment, which is currently 30 days on Free and 365 days on Pro and Team (see Pricing), and it is never less than 30 days. A later change of plan does not move the date. Content in the trash still counts toward the storage of the plan that funds it.
When the date has passed, the content is permanently deleted automatically, together with its images and files, and can no longer be restored. The owner of a timeline (for a team's timeline, the team's owner) can also delete a timeline or an item permanently straight away, without waiting for that date. Removing a single image or file from an item is permanent at once: it does not go to the trash.
The change history of a timeline also lets editors see and restore earlier versions of the timeline and its items, as far back as the change-history window of the plan that funds it. The trash and the restore feature are a convenience, not a backup service. Our Privacy policy explains how long we keep deleted data.
Disclaimers
We provide the service "as is" and "as available". We work to keep it running, secure and free of errors, but we can't promise that it will always be available, uninterrupted or error-free, or that no data will ever be lost. There will be maintenance, and there may be outages.
Timelines are made by their authors. We don't check whether dates, sources or claims in them are accurate, and we are not responsible for content that other users publish.
Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have as a consumer that can't be limited or excluded by contract.
Limitation of liability
As far as the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, such as loss of profit, revenue, goodwill or data you could have saved elsewhere, or for loss we could not reasonably have foreseen;
- our total liability to you for all claims connected with the service in any 12-month period is limited to the higher of the amount you paid for the service in that period and 100 euros.
These limits don't apply to liability that can't be limited by law. That includes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for intentional or grossly negligent conduct.
If you use Timescrolly for a business, you agree to compensate us for claims by third parties that arise from your content or from your breach of these terms.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add features or when the law changes. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you by email or in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless the change is required by law sooner. If you don't agree with a change, you can stop using the service and cancel your plan before it takes effect. If you keep using the service after that, you accept the new terms.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by Dutch law. Disputes are brought before the competent court in the Netherlands. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts there.
Before going to court, please contact us first. Most problems can be solved quickly and informally.
General
- If a part of these terms turns out to be invalid, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce a right straight away, we haven't given it up.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms to someone else without our consent. We may transfer ours to a company that takes over the service, provided your rights under these terms are not reduced.
- These terms, together with the policies they link to, are the whole agreement between you and us about the service.
- We may provide these terms in several languages. Where a translation differs from the English version, the English version prevails.
