Sharing and people
Comments
The people you have invited to a timeline can talk about it in place: a comment on the timeline as a whole, or on one of its items, with replies underneath. This article covers who can take part, where comments live, and what the owner controls.
Who can take part
Comments are for the people who already have a named place on the timeline: its owner, its collaborators — viewers as well as editors, see Collaborators and roles — and, for a team-owned timeline, the team's owner and admins. Nobody else sees the discussion, not even on a public timeline: someone who opens it because it is public, or through a share link, sees the timeline without its comments.
On a team-owned timeline, the owner can widen the audience to every team member with the Who can comment setting on the Comments tab: Collaborators, or Collaborators and team members. Team members take part only on a timeline that is visible to the team or public; a private team timeline stays between its collaborators. See Teams and the Team plan for what a member can see in the first place.
Viewers who want to fix something rather than discuss it can suggest the change instead — see Suggested edits.
Where comments live
- In the dashboard, a timeline's Comments tab lists every thread on it, newest first, with an Open / Resolved toggle. A thread about an item names the item and links to its page, and Only this item narrows the list to that item's threads.
- An item's own page in the dashboard has a Comments section below its details, with just that item's threads and a link to All comments on this timeline.
- In the viewer, the Comments button in an item's panel opens that item's threads, and the same button in the timeline's panel opens all of them, so you can discuss something while looking at it.
Wherever you are, Write a comment… starts a new thread and Reply answers an existing one. Replies sit under the comment they answer, one level deep — there is no replying to a reply. A comment is plain text, up to a few thousand characters, with no formatting, and a timeline holds up to a thousand comments and replies whatever its plan.
Editing, deleting and resolving
You can edit and delete your own comments; the owner, and anyone else who can manage the timeline, can delete anyone's. Deleting a comment that has replies leaves a "This comment was deleted" marker in its place, so the replies still make sense; deleting a reply removes it outright.
Once a thread is settled, Resolve moves it out of the Open list and under the Resolved filter, where it stays readable, and Reopen brings it back. The thread's author and every editor can resolve it.
Deleting an item takes its comments with it, and restoring the item brings them back — see Deleted items and restoring.
Closing the discussion
The owner can switch off Open for new comments on the Comments tab. Nothing is removed: everyone in the audience can still read the discussion, and threads can still be resolved or deleted, but nobody can post, reply or edit until it is opened again. Both this setting and Who can comment are recorded on the timeline's History tab.
Notifications
A new comment is reported to the timeline's owner — for a team-owned timeline, the team's owner and admins — and a reply to everyone who has taken part in that thread, in the app's notifications and by email, with a link that opens the viewer on that comment. Nobody is told about their own comments, and nothing is sent when a comment is edited or resolved.
Transfers
When a timeline changes hands, Who can comment goes back to Collaborators if it was set to the team, the same way visibility goes back to Private. The comments themselves stay with the timeline. See Transferring a timeline.
