Sharing and people
Sharing and visibility
Every timeline has a visibility setting that decides who can open it, and share links let you hand access to one more person without changing that setting. This article covers both, and what a public timeline actually exposes.
The three visibility levels
| Level | Who can see it |
|---|---|
| Private | Only you and the people you've invited as collaborators. |
| Team | Every member of the owning team, automatically, plus anyone you've invited as a collaborator. |
| Public | Anyone with the link, signed in or not. |
Private is the default for a new timeline. Team is only available for a timeline owned by a team — see teams and the Team plan — and being a team member is enough to view it; editing still requires an invitation, as described in collaborators and roles. Only the timeline's owner can change its visibility, from the Details tab.
Share links
A share link is how you hand a private or team timeline to someone who isn't a collaborator, without making it public. It doesn't apply to public timelines — those are already reachable by anyone with the URL. It's also the way to show a timeline to someone on the Free plan, which doesn't include collaborators.
You create one from the Share button on the timeline, or from Timelines > Share links in the dashboard, which lists every live link across the timelines you manage in one table. Give it an optional label, choose how long it should work — one hour, one day, seven days, thirty days, one year, or never — and create it. A timeline can hold up to ten live links at once.
The Share button's dialog has two panels, Share links and Collaborators. The second is the same roster as the timeline's Collaborators tab, so you can hand out a link or, on a paid plan, invite someone by email from the same place — see collaborators and roles.
On a team-visible timeline, the Share dialog also gives you a plain link for team members, which needs no token because the team already has access; a share link is only for reaching someone outside the team.
To show a timeline inside another web page instead of sending people to it, see embedding a timeline.
Revoking a share link
Both the per-timeline Share dialog and the dashboard's Share links page list every link with a Revoke action next to it. Revoking takes effect immediately: anyone still holding that URL loses access at once, and it can't be undone. If you need to share again, create a new link and pass that one out instead.
What a public timeline exposes
A public timeline opens for anyone with its link, with no sign-in required — its content, not its collaborator list, which stays visible only in the dashboard to people who can manage it, and not its comments, which stay between the people invited to it. Timescrolly may also list a public timeline on the Explore page, or feature it there and on the landing page, but that curation is done by Timescrolly, not something you switch on from your own timeline.
