The Land of Oz lies, in Baum's words, “cut off from all the rest of the world” by a desert. The Emerald City stands in the middle; round it lie the blue Munchkin Country in the east, the yellow Winkie Country in the west, the red Quadling Country in the south and the purple Gillikin Country in the north.

Neill's 1914 map draws it as a rectangle and swaps east and west: on the map the Munchkins are on the left.
