Every term, from Washington to today

Forty-five men have held the office in 47 presidencies since George Washington took the oath on a balcony in New York on 30 April 1789. This timeline draws one band per term: 69 of them, laid end to end. A term cut short by a death or a resignation ends on that day, and the successor’s band starts on the same day.

How to read it

  • Terms began on 4 March until 1933 and on 20 January from 1937, after the Twentieth Amendment. The current term is open and runs to today.

  • Party tags on every band: federalist, democratic-republican, whig, democratic, republican, national union and unaffiliated.

  • Threads to filter by: succession, assassination, impeachment, elections, law (the amendments) and firsts.

  • The map shows where power changed hands: inaugurations in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, and the places where presidents died or successors took the oath, from a Vermont farmhouse to an aircraft.

The oath, word for word from Article II of the Constitution:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Dates follow the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, the Miller Center and the National Archives.
