antarcticaiceShackleton’s Endurance, 1914–1917
Ernest Shackleton meant to cross Antarctica on foot, from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea. His ship never reached the coast. The Endurance froze into the pack in January 1915, drifted for nine months and was crushed. Twenty-eight men camped on the floating ice, took to three small boats, reached Elephant Island, and were rescued in August 1916 after six of them sailed a lifeboat to South Georgia and three walked across it. Not one of the twenty-eight died.
On the other side of the continent, the Ross Sea party laid the depots the crossing party would have needed, not knowing that nobody was coming. Three of them died.
How it is built
Routes: each leg is a period drawn on the map, from Plymouth to the pack, the drift of the ship and of the camps on the ice, the boats, the James Caird, the crossing of South Georgia and the Yelcho. Read the Ross Sea party’s bands against them: they run at the same time.
One day hour by hour: zoom into 19–20 May 1916 to follow the 36-hour march to Stromness by Shackleton’s own times, converted to GMT.
A coda: Shackleton’s death at South Georgia in 1922, and the wreck found in March 2022, a hundred years to the day after his burial.
Filter by shackleton for the Weddell Sea party, ross sea party for the men on the far side, lifeboats and navigation for the boat journeys, rescue for the relief voyages, and losses for the three deaths.
At Stromness
“Tell me, when was the war over?” I asked. “The war is not over,” he answered. “Millions are being killed. Europe is mad. The world is mad.”
Shackleton and the station manager, 20 May 1916, from South (1919). All dates are Gregorian.
