Twenty-two World Cups, Montevideo to Lusail

In 1930 thirteen teams played in one city; in 2022, thirty-two played in a country smaller than Connecticut, and the final was watched around the world. This timeline follows the men’s tournament from the 1928 vote that created it to Messi’s final, with the Women’s World Cup marked where it began in 1991.

How it is laid out

  • Each tournament is a band from its opening match to its final, placed on its host.

  • Each final sits inside its band at its kick-off time in UTC, at its stadium, along with the one or two matches people still talk about.

  • Three long bands show how the field grew: up to 16 teams, then 24, then 32.

Threads to filter by

  • finals: every final, 1930 to 2022

  • upsets: the results nobody predicted

  • brazil: five titles and two home tournaments

  • trophy: the Jules Rimet trophy, hidden, stolen, lost

  • controversy, rights and war: the tournament and the politics around it

Scores, dates and crowds follow the RSSSF records and FIFA’s own archive.
