# Suggested edits

> Let viewers propose changes to a timeline's items, then review, accept or reject what they suggest.

A viewer who spots something wrong on a timeline can propose the fix instead of describing it: a suggested edit. Nothing changes until one of the timeline's editors accepts it. This article covers who can suggest, how the owner turns suggestions on, what a suggestion can hold, and how editors review and undo one.

## Who can suggest

Suggested edits are for viewer collaborators — the people invited to the timeline as a Viewer, see [Collaborators and roles](https://timescrolly.com/help/collaborators). On a team-owned timeline, the owner can widen that with the Who can suggest edits setting: Viewer collaborators, or Viewer collaborators and team members. Team members can suggest only on a timeline that is visible to the team or public. See [Teams and the Team plan](https://timescrolly.com/help/teams-and-seats) for what a member can see in the first place.

Editors and the owner don't suggest: they edit the timeline directly. Someone who opens a timeline because it is public, or through a share link, can't suggest anything. Suggesting also needs a verified account.

## Turning suggestions on

Suggested edits are off until the owner turns them on, with Accept suggested edits on the timeline's Suggestions tab. They work only while the owner — for a team-owned timeline, the owning team — is on Pro or Team; if that plan lapses, nobody can suggest until it is active again. See [Plans and billing](https://timescrolly.com/help/billing).

Switching Accept suggested edits off stops new suggestions. Nothing is removed: the suggestions already waiting can still be reviewed. Both this setting and Who can suggest edits are recorded on the timeline's History tab.

## Suggesting a change, an item or a removal

There are three ways in:

- Suggest a change, in an item's panel in the viewer or on its page in the dashboard, opens the item's form with its current values. Change what is wrong and choose Send suggestion.
- Suggest removing this item instead, in that same form, proposes taking the item out altogether.
- Suggest an item, the viewer's + button or the button on the timeline's Items tab, proposes a new event or period.

Each suggestion holds one change: one edited item, one new item or one removal. It can carry a Message to the editors, to say why or where it comes from. A suggestion can change an item's title, dates, notes, location, sources, tags and entities, picking from what the timeline offers. It can also add or remove relations between items on this timeline. It can't create new sources, tags or entities, add images or attachments, or move an item into a period. Mention them in your message, and an editor can add them.

A timeline can only have so many suggestions waiting at once, and so can each person on it. When you reach the limit, wait for a decision or withdraw one.

## Following your suggestions

The timeline's Suggestions tab lists the suggestions you made, each with its status: Pending until an editor decides, then Accepted or Not accepted, or Withdrawn if you withdrew it. Open one to see it in full, including any note the editor left you. You see only your own suggestions; editors see everyone's.

While a suggestion is pending you can Withdraw it, and it won't be reviewed. A suggestion can't be edited once sent: withdraw it and suggest again.

## Reviewing a suggestion

Editors and the owner find every suggestion on the Suggestions tab, which opens on the pending ones. A suggestion's page shows the suggester's message and each change as a card, with the values it would set.

In the viewer, the Suggestions button in the bar at the top (on a phone, it is in the menu) lists the pending suggestions and opens the same review in a dialog, beside the list. An item with a pending suggestion also has Suggestions in its menus and its panel, which opens the dialog on that item's suggestions only.

- Tick the changes you want and choose the Accept button at the bottom of the page, which counts them. Whatever is left unticked is rejected.
- A change to an existing item lists each field it changes, each with its own box. Untick a field to keep the item's current value for it and still take the rest. That change then shows as Partly accepted, with the fields you left out marked.
- Changed since it was suggested means the item has been edited since the suggestion was made. The fields that moved start unticked and show three values: When suggested, Now and Suggested. Ticking one accepts the suggested value over the current one, so compare them first. A removal that changed starts unticked as a whole. If the item changes again while you are looking, what you ticked there unticks itself and says Changed again, check and tick again.
- A change to an item that has been deleted since can't be accepted.
- Reject turns the whole suggestion down.

Either way, you can leave a Note to the suggester, who sees it on the suggestion. The changes you accept are recorded in the timeline's history under your name, like any other edit of yours.

## Undoing an accepted suggestion

Right after you accept, the Changes applied message has an Undo button that puts the items back as they were. It works only while none of those items has been changed again since. Once that message is gone, restore the items from the timeline's History tab, as for any other edit — see [Deleted items and restoring](https://timescrolly.com/help/deleted-and-restore). Undoing doesn't change the suggestion itself: it still shows as accepted.

## Notifications

A new suggestion is reported to everyone who can review it — the timeline's owner and its editors, and for a team-owned timeline the team's owner and admins — and a decision to the person who made the suggestion, in the app's notifications and by email, with a link to the suggestion. Neither notification includes the change, the message or the note: those are only on the suggestion's own page. Nobody is told about their own suggestions or decisions.

## Transfers

When a timeline changes hands, Who can suggest edits goes back to Viewer collaborators if it included team members, the same way Who can comment goes back to Collaborators. Accept suggested edits stays as it was, and suggesting then depends on the new owner's plan. See [Transferring a timeline](https://timescrolly.com/help/transferring-a-timeline).
