# Deleted items and restoring

> How the trash works, how long it keeps things, deleting for good, and the record of who changed what.

Deleting an item or a timeline in Timescrolly does not erase it right away. It moves to the trash, where you can restore it until the date shown next to it, and every change that led up to it is recorded so you can see who did what and, where possible, put it back.

## Deleting an item

Deleting an item moves it to the trash: that timeline's Deleted items list, reachable from the Items tab. An editor can restore it from there until the date shown next to it; after that date it is deleted for good. If the item belonged to a period that was itself deleted, restoring it brings it back onto the main timeline rather than into a period that no longer exists — you can then restore the period separately from its own history, if you want the item to move back under it.

You can restore items one at a time, or select several in the list and restore them together. An item's comments go with it when it is deleted and come back when it is restored.

## Deleting a timeline

Deleting a whole timeline moves it, and everything in it, to the trash: the Deleted timelines list. It can be restored from there until the date shown next to it. Restoring it asks for a new address: the old one was released the moment you deleted the timeline, so links to it will not work again even once it is back. Everyone who had access gets it back immediately, including anyone with a pending invitation — but its place in any collection, and a transfer offer that was open on it, do not return.

## How long the trash keeps things

Every item and timeline in the trash shows the date on which it is deleted for good. That date is set the moment it is deleted, from the history window of the plan behind the timeline: 30 days on Free, 365 days on Pro and Team, and never less than 30 days. Upgrading or downgrading later does not move it. Until that date you can restore it; once the date has passed it is shown as being removed and can no longer be restored.

## Deleting permanently

The owner of a timeline, or the owner of the team it belongs to, can also delete permanently: straight away when deleting, by choosing Delete permanently instead of Move to trash, or later from the trash. A permanent delete removes the item or timeline, with its images and files, at once. It cannot be undone. Deleting a whole timeline permanently asks you to type its title first. Editors and team admins can move items to the trash, but not delete them permanently.

## The trash and your storage

Items and timelines in the trash still count toward your storage until they are deleted for good. If you run out of space, deleting them permanently from the trash frees it right away.

Removing a single image, file, poster or cover image is different: there is no trash for it. It is deleted immediately and its storage is freed at once.

## Change history

Any timeline you can edit has a History tab that records who changed what: items and timelines created, updated, deleted, restored, or undeleted, and changes to their files, each with the fields involved and their values before and after. You can filter the list by the kind of change, the field, the person, or a specific item, and narrow it to items only or to the timeline itself. Changes to who may comment, and to whether comments are open, are recorded as well, though they cannot be restored from here.

Some entries can be put back with Restore. This sets the changed fields to what they were before that entry — not just undoing your own edit, but replacing whatever is there now, including anything changed since. If something the entry depends on no longer exists — a tag, a cited source, the item's period — you are shown what is missing and can choose to restore the rest without it.

## How far back it goes

How far back the History tab reaches depends on the plan behind the timeline: 30 days on Free, 365 days on Pro and Team. See [Plans and billing](https://timescrolly.com/help/billing) for what each plan includes, or [pricing](https://timescrolly.com/plans) for the current numbers. If a team's plan lapses, the History tab becomes unavailable until it is active again — nothing is lost in the meantime, it is simply not shown.
