# Collections

> Gather timelines under one name, choose who sees the collection, and give it a page of its own.

A collection gathers whole timelines under one name: a course, a research project, a family archive. It is a list, not a copy. Adding a timeline to a collection leaves the timeline where it is, with its own visibility, and one timeline can sit in several collections at once. Removing it from a collection, or deleting the collection, never deletes the timeline.

## Creating a collection

Open [Collections](https://timescrolly.com/dashboard/collections) in the dashboard and choose Create collection. Give it a name and a visibility; the description, the cover and its caption are added afterwards, from the collection's Details tab.

The Collections page has a My collections tab for your own collections and, if you belong to a team, a Team collections tab for the collections of your teams. A team's own Collections tab, under [Teams](https://timescrolly.com/dashboard/teams), lists that team's collections too.

## Adding timelines

There are two ways to add a timeline:

- **From the collection.** On the collection's Timelines tab, Add timeline lists your own timelines, or the team's on a team collection, to pick from. Switch to Public timelines to search every public timeline, whoever owns it.
- **From the timeline.** Open any timeline you can see and choose Collections, the icon in the bar at the top (on a phone, it is in the menu). The Add to collection dialog lists your collections and, when the timeline may go in them, the collections of teams where you are the owner or an admin. You can also create a new collection there.

A collection of yours can hold any timeline you can open with your own account: your own, one you collaborate on, one your team lets you see, or a public one, for example from [Explore](https://timescrolly.com/explore). A share link doesn't count.

To take a timeline out, use the remove button on its row in the Timelines tab, or select several and choose Remove selected. The timeline itself stays as it was.

## Who can see a collection

A collection's visibility can be:

- **Private:** only you. On a team's collection, the team's owner and admins.
- **Team:** every member of the team. Only offered for a team's collections.
- **Public:** anyone, signed in or not.

A new collection starts private, and a new team collection starts at Team. You change the visibility in Edit collection on the Details tab.

A collection never widens access to the timelines in it. Each reader sees only the timelines they can already open themselves, so a public collection can hold your private timelines without showing them to anyone else. The number of timelines a reader sees counts only those.

## A collection's page

Each collection has a page of its own, at its `/c/...` URL. It shows the cover and its caption, the name, who it is by, the description, and the timelines in it as cards that open each timeline.

A public collection's page can be shared with anyone, and search engines may list it. To open it from the dashboard, choose View page next to the collection's name. A private or team collection's page opens only for people who can see the collection.

## Changing the URL

The collection's URL is filled in from its name when you create it. Afterwards you can change it with Change URL on the Details tab. Links to an old URL keep working and open the collection at its new one, until another collection of the same owner is given that old URL. Timescrolly warns you before that happens.

## Team collections

A team can hold collections of its own. On a team's collection:

- the team's owner and admins create it, add and remove timelines, and edit its name, description, cover and caption;
- only the team's owner can change its visibility or its URL, or delete it;
- contributors and members can view it when it is set to Team or Public, but can't change it.

A team collection holds only the team's own timelines and public ones. If one of its timelines stops being either, such as another owner's public timeline that is made private, it leaves the collection. The same goes for your own collections: a timeline you can no longer open leaves them. A timeline that leaves a collection this way doesn't come back on its own; add it again.

See [Teams and the Team plan](https://timescrolly.com/help/teams-and-seats) for the roles in a team.

## Deleting a collection

Deleting a collection, from its Details tab or from the Collections page, removes it for good. There is no trash for collections, and it can't be undone. Its URL and its old URLs stop working and are free to use again. The timelines that were in it are not touched.

On a team's collection, only the team's owner can delete it. Deleting a team deletes its collections too.

## Limits

Free includes up to three collections. Pro and Team have no set limit on collections, and each team has its own limit. See [pricing](https://timescrolly.com/plans) for the current numbers. A team whose plan has lapsed keeps its collections but can't create new ones.
